Entomology/Ecology/Evolution

I work with the ecology of insect systems in urban areas. Specifically, I am interested in how anthropogenic influence impacts mutualistic relationships between ants and their honeydew producing insect partners. As with all things entomology, I can never really focus on just one topic, so I have a few research projects currently underway!

Current Research Directions

  • ✺Auchenorrhyncha-Ant Mutualisms✺

    Auchenorrhyncha ant mutualisms are poorly described relative to their sternorrhyncha counterparts. I am working with a collaborator (Solomon Hendrix at University of Delaware) to publish a review article combining citizen science with previously published research to identify new trajecories for this research.

  • ✺Urban Ant Diversity✺

    As the world continues to urbanize, insect populations within cities are subject to the ongoing and increased effects of urbanization. Ants are ecosystem engineers, and impact many levels of ecosystem function, from soil diversity to insect community composition. I am interested in how ant populations respond to anthropogenic stress, and how these responses may indicate evolutionary potential within populations and across communities.
